This study provides innovative information on the simultaneous use of Limousin oak and chestnut wood in the ageing of wine brandy. Ageing was performed in 650-L wooden barrels and in 3000-L stainless steel tanks with staves over a 2-year period. Effect of both kinds of wood in the brandy features depended on the ageing technology. Stainless steel tanks with staves originated lower enrichment of the brandy in dry extract (0.89 vs. 1.25 g L−1), total phenolics (22.33 vs. 29.40) and low molecular weight extractable compounds (119.83 vs. 231.65 mg L−1), but promoted a faster evolution of the analytical colour (lower L*, higher C*, a* and b*) and sensory colour (topaz and greenish vs. golden). The aroma and flavour profiles of the brandy were not significantly influenced by the ageing technology. Therefore, it is a promising option for both ageing technologies because it ensures the quality of brandy, together with a lower cost of the wood and exemption of the blending operation.
This chapter provides an overview on European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) activities related to opportunistic spectrum sharing technology with a specific focus on (TV) white spaces. Key use cases are outlined and a novel approach for a coordinated and an uncoordinated approach for accessing the spectrum resource is given. A spectrum coordinator is indeed introduced in order to handle resource management. Furthermore, database system design and inter-database communication solutions are discussed as they are introduced by ETSI. Finally, various sensing mechanisms are detailed, which allow to monitor the radio environment and to feed decision-making components correspondingly.
This chapter describes outdoor transmission tests and field measurements in TV white spaces (TVWS) carried out in Europe. TVWS Measurements in Germany showed that the extended Hata model is appropriate to describe the path loss over distances up to a few kilometers. During the TVWS trial in Slovenia, we combine infrastructure sensing with geo-location database access to protect not only DVB-T, but also wireless microphone (WM) signals from TVWS devices interference.
Although entrepreneurship plays a critical role in fostering economic development, erasing inequality, and generating more balanced societies, a gap concerning the course, nature, and state-of-the-art of minority entrepreneurship scientific literature need to be fulfilled. A hybrid methodology, combining bibliometric methods and topic models (latent Drichlet allocation) is used to perform a thematic analysis of the minority entrepreneurship research stream. The analysis provides insight into the most relevant research themes as well as further research agenda.
Ecotourism can contribute to the conservation of environmental values, as well as to the development of positive synergies between agents in the tourism sector, tourists, and the local population. The growing interest in tourist offers with low environmental impact, which supports the local economy, translates into a competitive advantage for low-density territories. Based on this principle, within the scope of the present study, it is intended to evaluate the potential of the existing natural and rural features in the Beira Baixa region, located on the Center interior of Portugal, that can anchor the creation of sustainable tourism products. Despite the undeniable interest in carrying out studies to determine an aggregate suitability index for the development of ecotourism using Spatial Multi-criteria Decision Analysis, there are still no studies carried out in Portugal. The identification of areas suitable for the development of ecotourism, and their constraints, was carried out based on the integration of nine criteria using the Analytic Hierarchy Process in a Geographical Information System environment. The results obtained reveal that the region has high suitability for the practice of ecotourism activities, given the important natural heritage. This study was innovative to show the ecotourism potential based on a diversity of criteria as an aid to public administration agents with functions in planning, territorial management, and management of support mechanisms for the tourist sector. The use of the landscape diversity criteria, which had not yet been tested in previous studies, proved to be important in determining the ecotourism potential of the region, together with the landscape value based in the importance of the Montado agrosystem, that supports a variety of sustainable tourist activities. The information produced in the study may be useful for the design of new policies for valuing natural resources through tourism.
