Description
O presente trabalho é o resumo da Tese de Doutoramento com o mesmo título. The subject of energy availability has been in the center of mankind’s attention for a long time now. Since our society is nowadays vey dependente on petroleum products, which may disappear in the medium-term, alternative resources must be studied, developed and applied, in particular if they have a renewable nature.
In Portugal, the significance of liquid fuels consumption has been growing in the last decades and, consequently, the liquid biofuels may be of great importance for the future of the country. On the other hand, the stimulation of agricultural production of biomass that may be used as a source of energy may be a remarkable contribution for this sector of the Portuguese Economy.
Sweet sorghum crop is one of the most versatile species for biomass production, namely in view of its sugar content and potential etanol production at accessible costs.
The present thesis refers to the feasibility study on importance, ways of cultivation and transformation of Sweet sorgum for biofuel production in the Portuguese region of Beira Interior. In tune with the achieved results, this crop may be considered as a potential contribution to diferente forms of energy production and to restoration of the agricultural sector in the Portuguese region of Beira Interior.
