Wireless sensor networks can be composed of thousands of smart sensing nodes that capture environment data in a cost-efficient way. Such networks present new challenges when compared to traditional computer networks, namely in terms of smart node processing power and very limited energy resources. Ubiquitous computing can benefit from wireless sensor networks, from the perspective that sensed data can be used on behalf of the user without explicit intervention, turning ubiquitous computing into a reality. For the data to be available everywhere wireless sensor networks must be connected to the Internet. Two main approaches can be considered: proxy-based or sensor node stack based. This second approach turns sensors into data producing hosts, also know as ”The Internet of Things”. For years the TCP/IP protocol suite was considered inappropriate for wireless sensor networks, mainly due to the inherent complexity and protocol overhead for such limited hardware. However, recent studies made connecting wireless sensor to the Internet possible for integration on the future Internet. This paper surveys the current state-of-the-art on the connection of wireless sensor networks to the Internet, presents related achievements, and provides insights on how to develop Internet Protocol-based communication solutions for wireless sensor networks today.
In a "Massive MIMO" context, we evaluate low-complexity iterative DF detection techniques involving interference cancellation at the output of an MF multiuser detector. These techniques can offer some performance advantage over the somewhat more complex (due to matrix inversion requirements) linear, ideal MMSE detection. Moreover, we can achieve close approximations to appropriate performance bounds - which are able to take into account channel estimation imperfections -, even for NR/NT <10, when NR/NT is also high enough to ensure iterative DF convergence.
The peach is a stone fruit with a very juicy flesh, smooth skin, and a taste that satisfies the most demanding palate. The quality of this fruit is usually determined by texture, appearance, scent, flavor, and nutritional value. Peaches are very sensitive fruits, which deteriorate and ripen very quickly at environment temperature. Cold conservation is the usual method for delaying the product deterioration, but this process may cause chilling injury (CI). This damage is a physiological low temperaturedriven disturbance, which affects the fruit quality, reducing its storage and shelf life and impairing its organoleptic characteristics. The characteristics of the main techniques and treatments to mitigate the CI such as: temperature-dependent, controlled and/or modified atmosphere, intermittent warming (IW), ethylene inhibitors, Glycine Betaine (GB), Methyl Jasmonate (MeJA) treatments, exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) and genetic determination are reviewed. Its consequences are evaluated and the ideal conservation air temperature and humidity are set to enhance organoleptic characteristics.
This paper assesses the potential for technological modernization and innovation based on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in traditional agri‐ food companies located in the central region of Portugal. A survey was applied to 50 agri‐food companies of cereals, cheese, olive oil, dry sausages, honey, wine, and horticultural sectors. Results analysis show that companies use computers, have in‐ ternet service, and use social networks for business purposes. However, most of it have no webpage, do not use internet for advertising/selling/buying products, and have not promoted collaborators’ ICT training. Companies expect webpages to im‐ prove their productivity and/or marketing products/services. Recommendations were provided to promote the use of ICT for business purposes. Webpages, Facebook pages, and CRM systems were developed to a limited set of companies. The results of the satisfaction survey of the ICT solution confirm the company sales increase due to the web visibility gained by the company products.
