Abstract : In the present Western sociocultural environment, we live in an ambience of multicultural characteristics, namely in the music department. In this specific field, there is a wide range of artifacts, sound articulations and musical languages that aren't based in the structural part of our 'historical' and 'curricuralised' music culture, which predominates in the approach of standard and specialized musical education institutions.
Now, we can deduce that there is a clear deficit of the presence of other musical cultures in the contents of the current curricula. Based on this premise arises this work - considering that the presence of these different cultures in the scope of our western musical education represents an essential factor for students to build a solid foundation of understanding of the origin and meaning of dynamic processes, practices and musical languages that are constituted by their contemporary musical environment. In this way, they can achieve a satisfactory balance in the development of their musicality, and can achieve a set of relevant skills and a much more complete and creative integration in the present musical and artistic context.
The search for the solid integration of these concepts in Music Education in a broad sense, makes us reflect on possible Common Denominators present in the various cultures, on which may focus on what will lead to the development of a teaching methodology appropriate to the conditions of the current musical environment.
Therefore, this work constitutes a methodological outline for the Ensemble Music subject, based on the premise of a multicultural society, applying the concept of universals in music designated in this paper as Common Denominators.
