Description
Wye e Michel Debost.
Abstract : This report is in two parts: a Supervised Teaching Practice and a Research Project, both of which were carried out during the 2016/17 school year. The Supervised Teaching Practice took place at the Escola de Música do Centro de Cultura Pedro Alvares Cabral (Music School of the Pedro Alvares Cabral Cultural Center) in Belmonte, Portugal; and describes the methods used in the pedagogical practice. Analysis of the strengths, weaknesses, study, progress and results was made of one individual student’s lessons, and also of a chamber music group—a flute ensemble. The Research Project focussed on questions of breathing and sound production, which generally were the weakest elements in the flute technique of the students involved. The choice of this emphasis was based on the motivations of the researcher, who experienced an improvement in her flute playing at the time she started voice lessons. The Research Project consisted in the creation and application of a set of exercises, based on classical vocal warm-up exercises, as a way to improve the performance of the chosen group of students (also from the EMCCPAC). The methodology selected was action research and data analysis based on the researcher’s observation grids, student homework grids, and benchmarking tests. The value of the subject matter is supported by writings by important names in flute pedagogy such as Trevor Wye and Michel Debost, among others.
