A Gastroenterite é a inflamação do tracto gastrointestinal e pode ocorrer em cães de qualquer idade ou raça, contudo há uma maior incidência em cães jovens. As doenças gastrointestinais são bastante frequentes na prática clínica de pequenos animais e caracterizamse por uma súbita e grave manifestação de vómito e diarreia aguda, sendo estes os principais sinais clínicos. A sua etiologia é variada podendo as alterações a nível gastrointestinal ter origem em infecções sejam elas por bactérias, vírus, protozoários ou fungos; podem ser devidas a parasitas intestinais, a alterações na dieta, a alergias alimentares, envenenamentos, devido a medicamentos, por uma obstrução no tracto gastrointestinal ou devido a doenças metabólicas. Os cuidados a ter dependem da etiologia, mas baseiam-se de uma forma geral, na administração de fluidos e electrólitos para repor o desequilíbrio originado pela desidratação. A restrição de alimento e água até completo repouso do tracto gastrointestinal, a administração de antibióticos e fármacos para controlar o vómito e a diarreia prescritos pelo Médico Veterinário e a monitorização do animal devem também ser procedimentos tomados em conta. Com este trabalho pretendeu-se dar a conhecer o papel que o Enfermeiro Veterinário pode e deve desenvolver durante o acompanhamento do animal, quer desde a sua entrada nas instalações, passando pelo internamento até ao momento da alta clínica. São apresentados dois casos clínicos onde estão descritos todos os procedimentos que foram aplicados e tidos em conta.
