Description
An institutional context death is present almost daily, which makes it difficult to blind and maintenance of life to be lived. This proximity raises questions about life remaining and the perception people have of this. But both aspects ‘purpose of life’ and ‘perception of death’ in this environment are particularly delicate. These aspects led us to the core of the study: 'What have the perception that the elderly subjects (n=35) in two residential homes in the town of Castelo Branco, regarding the 'death' and 'death of the other' and simultaneously the implications of this insight in its institutionalized everyday life?'. This study aimed to analyze the perception between death and the death of the other in an institutional environment. In this context, we have chosen a case study (descriptive, exploratory) qualitative methodology in a sample of elderly subjects (n1=35) and technicians/operators of such residential homes (n2=4). A sample of 35 subjects was collected, mostly female (57.1%), widowed (80%), aged between 81 and 90 years (68.6 %), Catholic (97.1%), low qualifications (88.5%) and mean time of 3.7 years of institutionalization. The results revealed that the 'death' for these seniors is viewed as abandonment of those who love him and the unknown, as well as being a time of suffering, agony and isolation. Women have a higher token of grief and men indifference and remoteness. Old age shows that believe there is life beyond death, though religion does not present great representativeness in minimizing suffering. We found that the perception of "death" is seen as a last test of life, so that the 'death of the other' influences their perception of death and finitude, which triggers negative feelings, anxiety states and depressive signs. The results do not allow us to generalize, but allowed to verify to what extent the prospects of 'death' and 'death of the other' are related to the sense of life of the elderly, the institutional environment and their perceptions. We know there are many more experiential realities, but the evidence of fear, pain, suffering and isolation, which are present in these elderly after the loss of the other, prioritizes care, which should be an ongoing process because we are inspired by the death another.
