Description
Reading, particularly reading for pleasure, is a means to the development of the student as a whole, well-rounded individual. Long lasting reading habits may enhance the cognitive, affective and emotional growth of students and allow them to experience situations that would be otherwise out of their reach. This study reports the data gathered during an action-research project developed within the context of the supervised teaching practice of a 5th year class in the subject of English as a Second Language and part of the master in Teaching English and Spanish in Basic Education. This project is both theoretical and practical and is divided into three action-research cycles. Each cycle was developed through the implementation of reading strategies followed by reflexion and the reformulation of said strategies. This investigation’s aim rests upon the building of our knowledge of efficient pedagogical practices that promote independent reading. We are also interested in the role literacy plays in the enhancement of the learner’s literacy skills and vocabulary as well as their comprehensive knowledge of the world. To the 21st century student, that moves in digital environments and is overloaded with information, a digital structure of thinking is an essential literacy skill. The literacy instruction paradigm has undergone a shift from the traditional alphabetic system. Therefore, it urges to find suitable solutions for our students that are adapted to the role reading plays in today’s society. We believe in the expansion of the traditional concept of reading into a broader vision of literacy that puts a distinct focus on media and visual literacy. Students will need to be capable to think critically and operate functionally in a technological age while interacting with a variety of media sources. The educational community should be in touch with the learners’ educational needs in order to teach voluntary and competent readers. We perceive the teacher’s role as one of facilitator in the process of acquiring reading skills and habits. The class’ English library provided students with access to print, audio and digital reading materials, and the strategies employed by the teacher were meant to help the learners make full use of those resources. It was not our goal to make a thorough study on students’ motivation as the reduced amount of time spent with the class prevents us from acknowledging permanent changes in the students’ reading habits. We intended, however, to explore strategies, assess results and reflect upon our practice in order to successfully promote reading in English as a Second Language. XIII.
