Description
Abstract: This Report was carried out as part of the Masters’ Degree in Music Education at Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas do Instituto Superior Politécnico de Castelo Branco and it is divided in two different parts that complement each other. In the first section, the supervised teaching practice that took place at Escola de Artes do Centro de Artes e Espetáculos da Figueira da Foz during the academic year of 2015/16 is presented, described, analyzed and reflected upon, focusing on the practical curricular units of instrumental practice and group practice. The second section concerns the Artistic Studies Project incorporated in the group practice entitled “Context variety concerts by violin students: motivation, learning processes and perceptions”. The subject of this project brought up a discussion concerning several theoretical concepts in relation to the student’s motivational and learning processes, taking into account the social and cultural domain, such as the child’s development of musical identity and its relation to the execution of concerts in various different environments. The challenges identified through empiric search and the revised literature led to the implementation of an action research methodology. As such, an intervention interconnecting individual and group lessons with regular concerts in various settings was planned and carried out, as well as a research aiming to assess the implications of such intervention in both children, children’s parents and community’s perceptions. The results obtained from different sources leaded to the interpretation that violin learning through group lessons and regular public performances have positive effects in student’s motivation, learning processes and in their perception of the violin and its apprenticeship.
