Description
Abstract : The present report focuses on the school practice developed at Conservatório Regional de Música de Vila Real, which is part of the Mestrado em Ensino de Música of Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas of Castelo Branco. Particularly, it describes a research project that aimed to analyse the musical, social, and cultural dynamics enhanced by an ensemble of guitars, recently created by the researcher as a complement to the individual guitar classes. The project included seven guitar students from the 1st to the 5th conservatory degree. Theoreticaly, this study discusses crucial concepts of musical teaching, related to musical learning contexts and the processes of musical and instrumental development. Likewise, the study relates to social interaction and learning concepts as well as the construction of musical identities, which can be enhanced by the participation in the guitar ensemble. This project of action-research included an intervention between November 2015 and June 2016 of 90 minutes classes on a weekly basis and six concerts in different locations and contexts of the city. The students, their parents and the school director were interviewed. The interviews were analysed and interpreted in articulation with the notes retrieved by the systematic observation of the whole process. Results indicate that participants recognize the educational potential of musical, social and cultural dynamics developed within the guitar ensemble, as a complement to the individual guitar classes. Particularly, results show the importance of learning with peers as well as the recognition of music as a process of cultural sharing and musical identity development.
