This paper presents a dynamic interface and voicing algo- rithm for real-time performance of jazz piano comping. Starting with a given song with a predefined harmonic progression, the algorithm calculates and maps an array of chord voicings to a virtual piano keyboard that can be played in real-time with any physical multi-touch input device like an iPad or computer keyboard. By taking care of the note selection for the voicings, the interface pro- vides a simplified and intuitive way to play sophisticated voicings, while leaving the control over the performance aspects like timing, register, wideness and density to the user.
Sports performance is influenced by the interaction of several physical variables. For this reason, most sports need both strength and endurance capacities to maximize overall performance. Therefore, a combination of resistance and aerobic training, usually called concurrent training (CT), has been used recently as a way of simultaneously improving strength and aerobic performances according to the needs of a specific sport. This combination can be challenging and can influence training adaptations, being a problematic issue for coaches. The main objective is to provide coaches with a practical proposal for CT to improve athletes' performance in different sports.
This study seeks to fill a gap in market orientation literature about the hotel industry and deals with the construction of a market orientation scale tailored based on a sample obtained from the hotel industry in a multicultural context. The proposed model has three dimensions: intelligence generation, intelligence dissemination and coordinated response to the client, competition and market structure domains. Research results indicate that the scale has good psychometric indicators. Content validity was assessed by questioning a group of marketing experts across Western Europe. Working data indicates that the proposed model holds convergent and discriminant validity as well reliability.

The present study results from a set of studies developed in the scope of the project and design methodologies. Through non-interventionist and interventionist methodologies with qualitative basis, a management model was developed to apply in research project in the communication design field. On this way, this study evidences the importance of using suitable methodologies, applying project management and design management concepts, and lastly demonstrates how Design Thinking and visual thinking methods can improve the outcomes of the projects when these disciplines were used together. This research has as main goals to clarify the research project management in communication design, to demonstrate the importance of an application related to a management model in a research project in a professional practice context, to contribute for scientific knowledge. The present study intends also to understand how the project management can help, whether reasoning the problem in a holistic view or within a specific framework.
The aim of the present work was to assess the impact of different vegetable diets in the sensory acceptability of Senegalese sole.
Background Intangible cultural heritage includes knowledge and skills transmitted throughout times, and this also applies to the food sector. Traditional knowledge assumes important social and economic value, which is relevant both for sectorial clusters as well as for majority social groups. Scope and approach The objective of this review was to analyse the constraints and motivations for development in the sector of traditional foods, from the point of view of marketing and consumer trends. This review was based on published works searched for in scientific databases, such as ScienceDirect, PubMed, Scopus and web of Science. Key findings and conclusions This review showed that the value of tradition, recognized in many sectors of society, is also important in the food sector, which is particularly rich in ethnical elements, local ingredients, traditional formulations and social aspects, linked not only to the food itself but also to the act of eating and sharing. However, the food industry seeks development of new products that follow modern trends and are able to conquer today's consumers, while at the same time maintaining the identity of specific products, valued as traditional.
This survey focuses on the benefits of smart lockers and their potential contribution in the last mile problem. It first introduces the related concepts. Then, categorizes existing solutions and identifies the similarities and differences. Further, their strengths and limitations are discussed. Finally, it presents key challenges in the field, and discusses envisionedfuture research directions that mustbe factored in by researchers, implementers, and manufacturers to increase the acceptance of smart lockers and to improve their security.
The implementation of the Bologna process in higher education leads to rethinking the teaching-learning assumptions. Higher education today is focused on curricula, teaching-learning processes, subjects and course programmes attending to European credits system, teachers’ qualification and training, academic success and scholar results, performance standards, assessment of institutions, assessment of skills (and not merely knowledge). In 2010 a project (Construction of Learning | ConstAp) was developed in the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco, Portugal. The main goal was to motivate the adoption of changes concerning classroom methodologies and students’ autonomous workload guidance in the scope of the Bologna process implementation. This paper presents a proposal of pedagogical intervention to deal with the mentioned objectives, a project applied in a specific tourism course. The paper presents the first results collected regarding the project’s implementation and seeks to impart a methodology that can be applied to similar courses.
Television White Spaces (TVWS) are a spectral opportunity, for secondary users of the spectrum to deliver broadband access to rural areas. Most of the approaches now under test worldwide use a geo-location database to inform secondary users of the available channels, and avoid interference with primary users of the spectrum. The secondary network should follow a approach capable to communicate with a geo-location spectrum database, to store and retrieve information on spectrum occupancy, location of DVB-T broadcast towers and wireless microphones, maximum EIRP of secondary White Space devices (WSDs), sensing activity and other technical parameters. One group from the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is presently working on the definition of a protocol to access white spaces databases – PAWS. The IETF draft protocol was chosen and considered flexible enough to be adapted for the CREW-TV project model and requirements, since it is more comprehensive and less specific on details than other proposals.
Over the last few decades, we witnessed a revolution in acquiring very high resolution and accurate geo-information. One of the reasons was the advances in photonics and LiDAR, which had a remarkable impact in applications requiring information with high accuracy and/or elevated completeness, such as flood modelling, forestry, construction, and mining. Also, miniaturization within electronics played an important role as it allowed smaller and lighter aerial cameras and LiDAR systems to be carried by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). While the use of aerial imagery acquired with UAV is becoming a standard procedure in geo-information extraction for several applications, the use of LiDAR for this purpose is still in its infancy. In several countries, companies have started to commercialize products derived from LiDAR data acquired using a UAV but not always with the necessary expertise and experience. The LIDAR-derived products’ price has become very attractive, but their quality must meet the contracted specifications. Few studies have reported on the quality of outsourced LiDAR data acquired with UAV and the problems that need to be handled during production. There can be significant differences between the planning and execution of a commercial project and a research field campaign, particularly concerning the size of the surveyed area, the volume of the acquired data, and the strip processing. This work addresses the quality control of LiDAR UAV data through outsourcing to develop a modelling-based flood forecast and alert system. The contracted company used the Phoenix Scout-16 from Phoenix LiDAR Systems, carrying a Velodyne VLP-16 and mounted on a DJI Matrice 600 PRO Hexacopter for an area of 560 ha along a flood-prone area of the Águeda River in Central Portugal.
This case study refers to the collaborative work of pre-engineering and engineering students, supported by their content and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) teachers, on the development of a full semester assignment focusing on the design and construction of a dedicated glossary of terms. Based on a student-centered Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, intermediate tasks were proposed to the students to construct their own personal glossary about the subject. As a result of the combined effort of all actors, a full class bilingual glossary of terms was obtained for engineering design technologies as part of learning in engineering through a collaborative CLIL approach.
A Body Sensor Network can sense health parameters directly on the patient’s body, allowing 24/7 monitoring in an unobtrusive way. Several tiny sensors collect and route data to a special sink node. A new intra-vaginal biosensor was developed to study the relation between temperature variations and women health conditions, such as ovulation period, among others. We present a biosensor prototype and some initial results on real scenarios with a woman. One of the main issues in a body sensor network is the transformation of the sensor raw data into meaningful medical data for medical staff. Several approaches exist, from mobile device-based approaches to more powerful hardware such as a personal computer. This paper presents our current work in body sensor networks, namely a prototype for intra-vaginal temperature monitoring with initial results, and a mobile tool for data presentation of a three-tier body sensor network. The gathered results demonstrate the feasibility of the approach, contributing to the widespread application of body sensor networks.
