The development of a landscape ecological assessment and evaluation method applicable to the planning and management processes, and the impact assessment is the aim of this paper.
A large scale characterization and evaluation methodology is tested in a 365 square Km area where an intensive ecological characterization was performed. This methodology is referred to two spatial referentials: land use distribution and homogeneous landscape units, which are described in terms of their spatial distribution and attributes, their matrix, patch, or corridor character, its permeability, connectivity and complementarity.
A combination of both spatial referentials allows the application of algorithms evaluating different ecological values (conservation value, productivity, heritage value, functional value). The methodology is particularly suited to be used in the assessment of ecological impacts of land use changes and the construction of local and linear infrastructures.

In a wireless sensor network, energy is almost always the greatest limitation. Energy sources are restricted in many of the environments where nodes are deployed, limiting them to the use of batteries for power. Therefore, conserving energy is supremely important, however, such a task poses many challenges to hardware and protocol design. One of the greatest problems faced is reducing the energy consumption of the communications systems, which represents a substantial amount of the total consumption. This paper surveys the most recent schemes designed to reduce the communications module energy consumption with a focus on novel MAC protocols for ad-hoc wireless sensor networks. It initially describes the many challenges involved, then it analyses each protocol individually. Finally, the presented protocols are compared and the issues that remain open are raised for further research.
Currently, internet is the most wanted medium of communication and most used by people or entities. Unquestionably, it has transformed significantly consumer behaviour, namely in the access to information or in the way a product or service is purchased.
In this context, the evaluation of the effectiveness of websites has increased over time, following the evolution of the concepts of Human Machine Interface, Usability and User Experience Design.
In the context of the methods and processes of usability evaluation, different proposals have been developed, from direct observation, to interviews and questionnaires, among other techniques and tools.
Thus, this article is based on a case study of descriptive type, based on the literature review concerning the models of evaluation of the quality of websites.
The results of the article consist in the definition of a set of parameters to analyse the quality of the interface of websites and in the proposal of a checklist concerning content, aesthetics and navigation.

Physical education in schools aims to promote physical activity, socialisation, and interaction among students. Today, it is considered a very important subject for development and health. It encompasses several sports modalities, always with the purpose of promoting physical activity and motor development of those who practice. Orienteering is one of the modalities that has recently gained fame. Orienteering is a sport modality that integrates physical, cognitive, and emotional dimensions. It consists, as the name implies, of navigating to a certain area, using a map and a compass, aiming for the shortest possible route between several points marked on a map. The work described in this paper presents a case of the introduction of new digital technologies in this modality to simplify the administration of these events in a school environment and to promote interest in the practice of this sport modality. The web application that allows the creation and addition of the orienteering event, the visualisation of detailed information in an after-event context, and the registration and management of new organisers or orienteers will be presented throughout the paper. It also presents the mobile application that allows the organisers to start and finish events, manage orienteers of a given event, view the current position of orienteers, and view the results of past events. The mobile application presents a static orienteering map to the orienteer. The visit of the orienteer to each control point (assigned on the orienteering map by the organisers) is verified using the georeferencing features of the device. These tools facilitate the management of these events by organisers as well as their analyses through automatically generated information. It also makes the practice of this modality more appealing to students because it introduces a type of gamification. Moreover, it also benefits from being paperless because it makes it unnecessary to print maps for the execution of an event and because the administration of an event can be done without the need to mark the control points in the terrain.
The agro-industrial system represents annually circa 3,6 x 109 € in the formation of the Centro
Region of Portugal gross income and that accounts for 39% of the Portuguese overall return for
this sector. Given this dynamics it is of utmost importance to perform a consistent strategy to
promote the sustainable growth of this regional system income.
Therefore, the CERNAS/IPC research unit has developed an integrated approach bringing
together several regional actors under a networking logic that links the industrial needs with the
academia R&D capabilities, and of capacity building and entrepreneurship (2011-2013).
This strategy is rooted in the InovCluster, where CERNAS leads two anchor projects, the
in_AGRI and the ECODEEP, and collaborates with a third one, the AGRITRAINING. The
in_AGRI aims the upgrade of the system value chains by bridging the academia with the
industry in a series of workshops, supported with a knowledge transfer platform and a network
of research facilities, and ECODEEP will develop eco-efficiency tools, based on a LCA
approach to enhance the overall sustainability by improving practises and find new solutions
within an industrial ecology framework. The AGRITRAINING surveys the training needs of the
system, looking forward to complement the actual capacity building achieved by the Master
courses in Food Engineering and Environmental Management. In addition, an advanced training
in Environmental Entrepreneurship is being implemented, and an Innovation Management for
SME’s program is being designed, promoting a cultural change towards the sustainable welfare
of our present and future generations.

Having as a basis the theoretical reference of Positive Psychology, namely the concepts of “satisfaction with life” and “subjective happiness” the purpose of this paper is to contribute to an analysis of variables which are included in this line of research with a sample of students who are attending higher education. The aim is to investigate the relationship between the variables mentioned and the variable “locus of control” in a sample of students attending a course in Social Services (1st Training Cycle) and the masters courses (2nd Training Cycle) in Social Gerontology and Educational Social Intervention. The instruments used in this study are SWLS – Satisfaction with life scale (Pavot & Diener (1993); SHS – Subjective Happiness Scale (Lyubomirsky & Lepper (1999) and Locus of Control Scale (Levenson, 1974). According to the results obtained, it was possible to identify a positive correlation between the Internal Locus of Control and higher levels of Satisfaction with Life, however, the same type of correlation with the variable Subjective happiness was not identified. This last result places the question, which we believe to be worthy of a more in depth analysis on the distinction between the concepts “satisfaction with life” and “subjective happiness”.
The rise of Industry 4.0 has highlighted simulation optimisation as a decision-making tool for scheduling complex-manufacturing systems, specifically when resources are expensive and multiple jobs compete for the same resources. In this context, simulation optimisation provides an important mean to predict, evaluate and improve the short-term performance of the manufacturing system.
An important scheduling function is controlled job release; jobs (or orders) are not released immediately to the shop floor, as they arrive to the production system, but release is controlled to stabilize work-in-process, reduce manufacturing lead times and meet customer delivery requirements. While there exists a broad literature on job release, reported release procedures typically use simple rules and greedy heuristics to determine which job to select for release. While this is justified by its simplicity, the advent of Industry 4.0 and its advanced scheduling techniques question its adequateness.
In this study, an integer linear programming model is used to select jobs to be released to the shop floor. While there are some recent studies that use a similar procedure, these studies assume the release decision for a given set of jobs is optimized in discrete time intervals. In contrast, in this study, we analyse the impact of different triggering intervals. Experimental results for a pure flow shop support our contention that simulation optimisation as a decision-making tool for job release is likely to be too important to be overlooked
The idea for the development of an action research methodology work about the possibilities of implementing a holistic approach in music teaching is the result not only of the indispensable academic reflection, but also of the professional experience of the authors as researchers and teachers in the area of music teaching. The following research questions (1 and 2) and objectives (3 and 4) were addressed: 1) how to implement a holistic and multidisciplinary music didactic within the scope of musical training classes at elementary education level? 2) how effective and relevant is the implementation of a holistic and multidisciplinary music didactic within the scope of musical training classes at elementary education level? 3) to adapt, create and implement a diverse set of exercises and procedures potentially conducive to a teaching-learning experience based on a holistic and multidisciplinary setting; 4) to evaluate the effectiveness of these exercises and proce-dures, taking into account, inter alia, students learning progression and motivation. Although the small number of students participating in this work doesn’t allow any kind of scientific generaliza-tion of the research outcome achieved, the data obtained seems to reinforce the effectiveness of holistic procedures, especially in terms of students’ interest and motivation.
There are many uses for machine learning in everyday life and there is a steady increase in the field of medicine; the use of such technologies facilitates the tiresome work of health professionals by either automating repetitive tasks or making them simpler. Bed-related disorders are a great example where tedious tasks could be facilitated by machine learning algorithms, as suggested by many authors, by providing information on the posture of a particular bedded patient to health professionals. To assess the already existing studies in this field, this study provides a systematic review where the literature is analyzed to find correlations between the various factors involved in the making of such a system and how they perform. The overall findings suggest that there is only a significant relationship between the postures considered for classification and the resulting accuracy, despite some other factors such as the amount of data available providing some differences according to the type of algorithm used, with neural networks needing larger datasets. This study aims to increase awareness in this field and give future researchers information based on previous works’ strengths and limitations while giving some suggestions based on the literature review.
Attention is an important variable that can dictate the success and failure of an activity or task. This variable is characterized by the ability to direct cognitive resources to a given situation. The purpose of this research was to find patterns in the students’ attention profiles, according to their academic achievement, during the physical education class and in different sports. We used the ATEST-EF questionnaire (Petrica, 2010) in which students had to answer the question «What were you thinking the moment you heard the signal?»
The study involved 156 students from the 3th cycle of basic education, aged between 12 and 16 years old ( = 14,7 ± 1,3) evaluated in four different sports taught in the discipline of physical education (athletics, gymnastics, basketball and football), and in four moments of the class. Considering our variables, we used Chi-Square and Kruskal-Wallis statistical tests. The results show that task attendance holdsthehighestpercentagevalues throughouttheclassinrelationtotheremainingcategories, regardlessoftheiracademicperformance and sport, but we observed that students with satisfactory and good academic performance have more stable values of attention regarding the students with less academic performance. We found statistical significance at the end of the class between students with good academic performance and affective attention, and among students with lower academic performance and attention to other things. Subsequently, we used the same classification to compare the profiles of attention among the four mentioned sports. We observed some patterns between team and individual sports, but did not find statistically differences, however the results suggest a positive relationship between attention and academic performance.

The land use and land cover pattern of landscapes are key elements of basic landscape structure; accordingly, this pattern has an important role in landscape management, nature conservation and preservation. In the other hand the human impact on the ecological environment has attracted a significant amount of attention. In this study, hemeroby index (HI) was used to quantify the degree of human disturbance, and the relationship between HI and landscape pattern metrics was explored in a region of Central Portugal. The main objectives of this study were to analyze the temporal and spatial characteristics of landscape pattern, and its relationship with different degrees of human disturbance. The Spearman’s correlations were determined to reveal the statistical connections between the landscape metric parameters and the HI values. At a landscape level the Mean Perimeter-Area Ratio (MPAR) showed a significant statistical connection with the HI. At a class level most of the metrics can be used to estimate the spatial changes of the hemeroby level, with Mean Patch Size (MPS) and Mean Perimeter-Area Ratio (MPAR) showing significant statistical connection with the hemeroby index, for agricultural areas, pastures and seminatural areas.
