Advances in ISO standardization of bee pollen.
This work focuses on the study of water–sediment interaction around abandoned uranium mines with open-pit lakes and mine dumps. Nineteen water and eleven stream sediment samples were collected in the abandoned Barrôco D. Frango mine, central Portugal. The trace element distribution was compared with other abandoned uranium mines in Portugal and worldwide. Generally, U, Th, and As contents in the open-pit water are high and similar to those of downstream water, suggesting its influence on aquatic systems. In abandoned mines with small to medium U exploitation, the stream sediments are moderately to heavily contaminated with U, Th and As, being U and As the most important contaminants, confirmed by their partition coefficients. A moderate to considerable potential ecological risk (34–79) was found around the abandoned Barrôco D. Frango mine area, mainly due to As contents in stream sediments. Water and stream sediments from abandoned U mines worldwide have U levels of up to 436 μg/L and 5024 mg/kg, respectively, while those from Barrôco D. Frango have 37.3 μg/L and 189 mg/kg, respectively. However, the longer the distance from the Barrôco D. Frango open-pit lake and mine dump, the higher U, Th and As contents in stream sediments, which is a warning indicator. Cluster heat maps of the water composition from four abandoned uranium mine areas show that Mondego Sul and Barrôco D. Frango mines are the most geochemically similar. Results show that stream sediments should be included in water quality management and future remediation plans of abandoned uranium mines.
Introduction: The motivation in Physical Education classes declines as students continue their studies, so its important programs that motivate and arouse interest in learning these themes, adding several and different approaches in these classes. Objective: The objective of the present study was to verify if the application of a strength circuit in high-school students could cause improvements in the strength of the upper and lower limbs. Methods: We evaluated 44 students (M = 24 / F = 20) of the 12th year in high school (EG = 22 students and CG = 22 students). Results: Significant differences in the post-test were observed in the horizontal jump, with a higher mean in the experimental group compared to the control group. In the 1kg medical ball throwing the differences were significant in both moments (pre and post-test), when comparing the groups, with a superior mean in the experimental group. In the 3 kg medicinal ball throwing, significant differences were also observed in both moments, comparing the performance of both groups. The push-up tests did not present significant differences in the pre-test, but showed significant differences in the post-test, with higher means in the experimental group. Conclusions: Through the applied training program, with a duration of 15 minutes, it was possible to verify that the experimental group obtained higher gains, when compared to the control group, for all the variables under study.

Introduction: Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), associated with execution of musical performance, are usually referred to the upper limb, neck and lumbar spine.
Objective: The general objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an exercises protocol of muscle relaxation in the decrease of pain, discomfort and activity levels of the neck and shoulder muscles in different types of musicians with musculoskeletal disorders.
Methods: The sample was composed by 12 students of the music course of Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas de Castelo Branco, who were divided in two groups: strings (7 participants) and wind (5 participants). The sample was composed by 7 male and 5 female musicians with an average age of 20,75 years. Data collection was performed in two stages: T0 before the realization of protocol and T1 after the application of the intervention. In the two moments, the instruments and scales used were the Surface Electromyography (sEMG), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of pain and discomfort in the neck-shoulder and Neck and Upper Limb Index (NULI-20). About EMG, the data collection was realized while participants performed a 15 minutes repertoire wherein the muscles evaluated were the trapezius (upper, middle and lower) and the deltoids (anterior, middle and posterior). Intervention protocol consisted in relaxation and stretching exercises of the muscles in study realized in class and autonomous execution in the beginning, break and final of the instrumental daily practice of each one of the participants with duration of 4 weeks.
Results: There is a significative decrease in the VAS of pain (p=0,008) and discomfort (p=0,012) but not significative in the values of NULI-20 and RMS (p>0,05).
Conclusions: Intervention protocol applied in this study was effective in the decreased intensity of pain and discomfort and contributed to the decrease of the values of NULI-20 and myoelectric activity levels of trapezius and deltoids, although without significance. These results confirm the idea that prevention programs should be early implemented in music schools in order to avoid the appearance of PRMD in this population.
