ABSTRACT: Introduction: Music can be characterized as a representation of feelings, having also scientifically evidenced benefits in various contexts. The heart rate variability is directly related to the central nervous system and any situations that can influence it. Therefore, depending on the type of music, heart rate may be subject to changes that may be related to the emotional well-being that music stimulate. To that purpose, the main objective was to study the heart rate variation in a group of individuals exposed to music that can trigger different emotional states. Methods: In the first phase of the study, 20 classical music songs were tested in 73 healthy subjects, in order to distinguish two songs that stimulate distinct emotions with the purpose of applying them in the second phase of the study, namely to a sample collected in 3 geographical dispersed hospitals, so as to ensure an evaluation in the same clinical contexts but different geographic locations. The two songs were applied to 50 subjects and we registered the heart rate in four different times, before and after each song with an interval of 3 minutes between each time, including a break between songs. Thus, this study is considered prospective cross-sectional with non-probability sampling technique for convenience. Results: We found statistically significant differences in heart rate at the 2-4 moment (p = 0.04) and at the 3-4 moment (p = 0.005), with a significant correlation of the same with Gender and Moment (p = 0.019), Place and Moment / Music (p = 0.039) and Stress and Moment / Music (p = 0.030). Conclusion: We found changes in heart rate according to the emotional nature of music, thus confirming the central research hypothesis of this study.

The article contextualizes the training of teachers in Portugal, taking as references, first to change social policy in Portugal before the fall of the dictatorship and, at this juncture, the trend between the Reform Veiga Simão (1973) and Law on the Education System (1986). Attempts to show that the creation of Higher Education and the Polytechnic School of Education (ESEs), on the eve of the 80, in conjunction with the movement of some innovative universities, broke with the traditional models of organization of teacher training in Portugal. Considers that the establishment of the Polytechnic Higher Education has a break from the monolithic model of teacher training through, inter alia, of their curriculum, trained the staff of ESEs teachers and young people themselves, approached them in schools which, in fact, working teachers; boosted educational research, made available to the school community human and material resources essential to the development of the educational process and implemented a broad framework for provision of training and expertise and then if desired, but had not been reached. Finally, describes the current framework for initial training of teachers, driven by recent amendments to the Law on the Education System and as governed by the instruments) - the degree to be awarded degrees by the Universities and Polytechnics and b) - the legal regime of professional qualification for teaching in pre-school education and school education.
Introduction: Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), associated with execution of musical performance, are usually referred to the upper limb, neck and lumbar spine. Objective: The general objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of an exercises protocol of muscle relaxation in the decrease of pain, discomfort and activity levels of the neck and shoulder muscles in different types of musicians with musculoskeletal disorders. Methods: The sample was composed by 12 students of the music course of Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas de Castelo Branco, who were divided in two groups: strings (7 participants) and wind (5 participants). The sample was composed by 7 male and 5 female musicians with an average age of 20,75 years. Data collection was performed in two stages: T0 before the realization of protocol and T1 after the application of the intervention. In the two moments, the instruments and scales used were the Surface Electromyography (sEMG), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) of pain and discomfort in the neck-shoulder and Neck and Upper Limb Index (NULI-20). About EMG, the data collection was realized while participants performed a 15 minutes repertoire wherein the muscles evaluated were the trapezius (upper, middle and lower) and the deltoids (anterior, middle and posterior). Intervention protocol consisted in relaxation and stretching exercises of the muscles in study realized in class and autonomous execution in the beginning, break and final of the instrumental daily practice of each one of the participants with duration of 4 weeks. Results: There is a significative decrease in the VAS of pain (p=0,008) and discomfort (p=0,012) but not significative in the values of NULI-20 and RMS (p>0,05). Conclusions: Intervention protocol applied in this study was effective in the decreased intensity of pain and discomfort and contributed to the decrease of the values of NULI-20 and myoelectric activity levels of trapezius and deltoids, although without significance. These results confirm the idea that prevention programs should be early implemented in music schools in order to avoid the appearance of PRMD in this population.

Population aging is widely recognized and investigated in the literature. However, despite knowledge and progress made, older workers continue to face several challenges in the labour market, related to age-based stereotypes and discrimination. This research intends to demystify these stigmas by analysing the self-attributed competencies held by these workers. To achieve this, we conducted an exploratory study, using a questionnaire addressed to the Portuguese population, active in the labour market, answered by 606 subjects. Data were analysed using statistical descriptive and frequency analyses and ANOVA’s. The results showed that older workers held the competencies most valued by employers, mentioned in recent studies. Significant differences were identified in the competencies when compared by sex, age, academic degree, enterprise size and sector and younger workers. The results suggest intervention clues that can contribute to breaking stereotypes and promoting an improvement in human resources management policies, thus increasing both the recruitment and selection and training and development practices of older workers, and contributing to their maintenance in the labour market as well as their input to national organizations and economies. It contributes to the literature by challenging age discrimination and by promoting knowledge of the main competencies held by older workers.

This article presents details on the techniques and methodologies used and results obtained in an experimental work focusing the study of the influence of various geometric and dynamic parameters on the performances of an air curtain device. The studied configurations correspond to typical aerodynamic sealing situations, applied in commercial spaces, where it is intended to keep a comfortable environment without the influence of exterior conditions. After some recommendations on selection, installation and operation, the energy and finance savings for open public spaces that use this kind of fence are estimated and some results of technical inspections conducted in commercial establishments are presented.
Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networking (VDTN) was proposed as a new variant of a delay/disruptive-tolerant network, designed for vehicular networks. These networks are subject to several limitations including short contact durations, connectivity disruptions, network partitions, intermittent connectivity, and long delays. To address these connectivity issues, an asynchronous, store-carry-and-forward paradigm is combined with opportunistic bundle replication, to achieve multi-hop data delivery. Since VDTN networks are resource-constrained, for example in terms of communication bandwidth and storage capacity, a key challenge is to provide scheduling and dropping policies that can improve the overall performance of the network. This paper investigates the efficiency and tradeoffs of several scheduling and dropping policies enforced in a Spray and Wait routing scheme. It has been observed that these policies should give preferential treatment to less replicated bundles for a better network performance in terms of delivery ratio and average delivery delay.
These paper seeks to improve our knowledge of Portuguese epidemiological and demographic change through the twentieth century up until nowadays. Demographic Transition, as defined by Warren Thompson (1929), occurred in Portugal, much later than in other developed countries. Economic, Political, cultural, religious and social causes delayed the beginning of decline of both mortality and fertility. Our aim is to develop the Demographic change with a focus in mortality. In the beginning of the twentieth century, short and instable life cycle marked population day-to-day and threw infant and general mortality to highest levels and life expectancy to one of the Europeans shortest one. Epidemiological transition occurred and today, Portugal has one of the lowest infant mortality and life expectancy has more than doubled. As in the majority of post-transition countries, Portugal is ageing, and today, is in the top countries with the lowest fertility rate and with the highest rate of old population.
